If you go to a car dealership, you will probably see all the latest and greatest models out which sales people are trying to push. Then you notice last years model at a great price that the dealership wants to get rid of. But what if last years model costs the same as the newer models. Chances are it will probably sit on the lot for a long long time. So the question that we should ask ourselves is why are we paying the same amount of cash for a previous generation game when the newer generation counterpart costs about the same.
There are a lot of ports for the PS4 and Xbox One with support for Xbox 360 and PS3 still on going. The difference between the current generation is that the games are more smoother and have way better graphics or at least more detail than the previous generation ones. So what is the benefit of getting the previous gen. Well besides not having to fork over $400+ for a newer console, not much or at least no benefit.
Practically the same game across 6 different consoles |
Now the argument can be made that the PS4 and Xbox One are still new consoles and there aren't as many console in the hands of the consumer as there are for PS3 and Xbox 360. That didn't stop the developers from charging $59.99 when the Xbox 360 and PS3 were released in 2005 and 2006. So why not stop charging $60 for a single game for previous generation consoles.
Another argument can be made that games are still expensive to make costing millions each year to create a single AAA title. I don't disagree with that argument but it still doesn't excuse the publishers from trying to milk every penny from gamers. When Dell releases 2 models of the same computer one with an i5 processor and the other with a Pentium processor it doesn't charge the same price for both of them.
Eventually I will be transitioning to the PS4 and will be keeping my PS3 along with my 360 and Wii U ( Yes I have a Wii U so what). When a new game is released guess what console I will be buying said game for. What would be my incentive to purchase the same game on PS3 if it costs the same.Eventually game companies will start to complain that they are not selling enough games on the PS3 and 360 and then just stop supporting the console all together.
I am not against game companies making money, I think they should be compensated for their hard work and creativity. However they should really rethink their pricing strategies and charge the right amount for a game that is not as advances graphically as the other ones. So to close this article, Previous Generation Games should cost less than new gen.
