Ever since the introduction of digital download on consoles, they have been at the same price point as physical games. Sometimes the digital copy costs a lot more than a physical copy once the reaches the $19.99 phase. But I've never understood why Digital Copies cost the same. I know that game companies are very greedy when it comes to profits. But as a games I know that for every game sold online via digital store either on Xbox Live or PSN, the company saves on printing and manufacturing costs as well as shipping. Not to mention strict return policies online. Purchase at a store and you have 15 to 30 days to return as long as it's shrink wrapped. How many of us can say we've carefully take a game out of the wrapper because we weren't so sure of how the game was going to be only to return it the next day because it was horrible.
Of course ET was the exception, or risk facing an angry mob |
After all this time, finally one of the bigger console manufacturers will finally start selling day one games at a discount. Microsoft's own Studio manager has stated that they are testing a few options at these deals. Starting today (02/18) until 02/24 Xbox One owners can get Ryse: Son of Rome for $39.99 on Xbox Live.
Son of Rome was a launch title for the Xbox One and still retails for a full $59.99 on several outlets. However the game can be found cheaper online but currently the Xbox Live version is the least expensive to date with $39.99 while costing $49.99 on Amazon. Son Of Rome was developed by Crytek and published by Microsoft which makes it a second party release. So far there has been no word of including 3rd party titles of if these kinds of deals will continue, however it is too early to tell.
Sony has yet to announce anything similar for day one digital, however it's PS Plus service is favorable among those who have it. However I would still like to see something similar.
