Highly Unlikely
With news going around everywhere that Amazon has purchased Double Helix, creators of the Xbox One Freemium Killer Instincts, everyone is up and about ranting about how amazon is ready to enter the console market and become a top contender and even outperform PS4 and Xbox One.
While there's no denying that Amazon has the money and loyal fan base to start a new console I highly doubt that they are going to be anything but a top contender to take on PS4 and Xbox One. The console that Amazon has in store for its customers is rumored to be below $300. So in other words $299.99 plus tax. It is also going to run Android with a different skin a la Kindle.
You know what else runs android and retails for less than $300. Ouya (am I pronouncing it correctly?). The Ouya retails from $99 to $129 and practically runs android with all the android games released in the market since the beginning that supports the controller pad. It also has a quad core processor which seems to be the norm and doubt they will be moving to an 8 core processor anytime soon. Amazon's console will be exactly the same.
Not to mention that there are other consoles with the Android OS coming to the market as well. Not just Amazon's. Heck you can even connect your old android phone that supports HDMI to your TV download a skin and purchase a bluetooth controller and you have yourself an Android Gaming Machine.
Im not saying that Android is bad for games, in fact there are some interesting games available and with the gamepad it makes things even better than tapping your screen. Hoping for a high score. Not to mention all the emulators available for classic gaming.
What I am saying though is that Amazon game console is probably a lost cause. I'm not doubting it wont be successful as Amazon does have a loyal fan base, but Amazon is practically doing something that almost 10 other companies are doing. How will the Amazon Console be different? Will you be able to upgrade? Will they have all the latest CPU, Ram and GPU? PS4 is a pure gaming machine while Xbox One is an all in one entertainment center (In future updates) Ouya and other companies are going for the Android Market, What can amazon offer that hasn't already been offered.
The games are what makes a console but if all your going to have is Angry Birds and a few other ports which isn't bad but why play those games over and over again if you already beat them 20x from all the different android devices you have already purchased. Not to mention that its going to be a while before Double Helix Releases any good quality games. I guess until then, there is really nothing that the amazon console is offering to get excited about. Specially at $300.
