Just what is freedom anyway?
Ah freedom really has no meaning in today's society. Even an electronics giant like Sony can practically rape you in the process even if you are not at fault. Recently a judge granted Sony a Subpoena to get the IP address of those who have ever visited GeoHotz website or twitter account since January 2009.
Sony filed a lawsuit in January against GeoHotz and other 100 hackers that showed people how to bypass the PS3's security system. However the list could extend to the thousands if Sony decides to go after them. Even if you are an innocent bystandard who was just websurfing and accidently clicked on GeoHotz website, Sony has your IP information and in turn can get a wealth of information.
in court documents, Sony rejected arguments submitted by the Electronic Frontier Foundation that the requests were “overly broad” and violated Hotz's Free Speech rights. Sony said it needed the information to learn the “identity of those who have downloaded the circumvention devices from Mr. Hotz’s website" and to assess “how rampant the access to and use of these circumvention devices has been in California in order to rebut Mr. Hotz’s suggestion that his illicit conduct was not aimed at the forum state.”
GeoHotz has been battling Sony with donations from fans everywhere to continue the lawsuit but if this teaches us anything is that as long as there's a company with big pockets, there is no such thing as justice and the company can get all your information and use it for their own benefit.
Thank God we live in a country that values money over people and morality. Not that I'm blaming Sony for what their doing but to get information on anyone who visited GeoHotz website since 2009 is too much and is practically violating people's rights to the internet. Sony could simply upgrade the system and do what microsoft did and ban people from their service but they take it a step too far in the wrong direction.
